Decentraland, an Ethereum-based metaverse platform, is preparing to launch a desktop client that will significantly improve graphics and performance.
The update is set to address limitations of the current browser-based version, which has been criticized for technical shortcomings.
The desktop client will move into public beta on October 22nd, giving users a more seamless experience in the virtual world.
What can you expect from this update?
The upcoming desktop client introduces improved visuals and improved in-game mechanics. While Decentraland maintains its cartoonish style, the new version offers a higher level of detail, smoother animations, and more dynamic environments. Platform performance has also been significantly upgraded, resulting in faster frame rates and shorter loading times.
Agnieszka Besz, Engineering Manager at Decentraland, confirmed that the desktop client supports more concurrent users in the same space. “We have over 200 avatars in the same place, so our clients have no issues,” Besz said. Previously, zones were limited to 100 users due to performance constraints.
This update marks a shift in Decentraland’s focus towards improving the social aspect of the platform. The developers plan to introduce features such as quests and badge systems to track player progress and promote social engagement.
Events such as Decentraland’s annual three-day music festival scheduled for November will serve as an important test of the platform’s new capabilities to handle large gatherings.
What’s next to Decentraland?
Currently, desktop clients are the priority, but Decentraland is also considering entering the virtual reality (VR) space in the future.
The team sees VR as a way to deliver more immersive social experiences, but has stated that VR integration will only be pursued once the performance of the desktop version is fully optimized.
The current desktop client represents an important step in improving Decentraland’s overall functionality and user experience. The public beta will be available for both Mac and Windows users on October 22nd.
