Originally designed in 2D and now being mapped into a 3D environment via Unreal Engine 5, Colony’s creators define the project as a “1.5 player” game. In this way, agents are not simply non-playable characters (NPCs), as they have unique, dynamic biographies that are shaped over time by human interactions with the in-game AI.

For example, one of the standout features previewed so far is the ability for avatars to create entirely new items from games, images, etc., and then create and store them (technically on their own) as NFTs. To maintain balance and progression throughout play, a “Dungeon Master” AI is used to approve generated items and manage the underlying simulation.
