Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has revealed its readiness for post-quantum cryptography, arguing that the industry should begin migration efforts immediately despite uncertainty about when sufficiently powerful quantum computers will emerge.
The company established an independent advisory board on quantum computing and blockchain earlier this year to distinguish between exaggerated and real risks. The board concluded with high confidence that a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of breaking current encryption standards will eventually be built, rendering the encryption that protects nearly all major blockchains vulnerable.
Although the threat is not imminent, the board emphasized that post-quantum encryption solutions already exist and are becoming standardized. The more difficult challenges are operational: migrating millions of users, coordinating decentralized protocol upgrades, and maintaining current security standards throughout the transition.
Coinbase argues that the timeline for discussions is largely unimportant because preparations must begin, and the company is currently developing a detailed playbook to ensure it can take rapid action once the standards are finalized.
System upgrades, developer workshops and consortium funding
Coinbase is pursuing three parallel workflows to improve quantum readiness: The company is developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum iteration of its proprietary key management system that protects approximately 99.9% of currently held assets using cutting-edge multi-party computing protocols designed to prevent any single party from reconstructing private keys.
Within the next year, Coinbase plans to offer an automated signature pipeline that integrates secure enclaves, secret sharing, and threshold cryptography to support post-quantum signature algorithms across decentralized environments. Dedicated research efforts over the next two to three years will build full MPC capabilities for grid-based and potentially other post-quantum signature approaches.
In addition to key management, Coinbase is conducting an enterprise-wide inventory of all crypto systems to prioritize migration based on importance, exposure, and complexity, including Base Layer-2 networks, as Ethereum advances its own post-quantum roadmap.
Additionally, Coinbase will co-host its first working session with Stanford University in August, bringing together Bitcoin Core developers, crypto experts, and researchers for an intensive discussion on Bitcoin’s post-quantum migration. The goal of the August workshop is to evaluate realistic timelines, evaluate viable migration strategies, and identify what the distributed developer community needs to move forward. The company plans to convene these sessions regularly to ensure the conversation remains productive and grounded.
Additionally, Coinbase, a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Consortium along with BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Blockstream, Strategy, and others, is devoting internal engineering resources to open source contributions, including proposals such as BIP-360, while also contributing to a fund that supports Bitcoin developers solving quantum-related problems.
The consortium will also serve as an authoritative source of information on Bitcoin’s security state and post-quantum readiness. Coinbase emphasized that no single entity can solve this problem alone, emphasizing the need for a coordinated effort among researchers, developers, protocols, and financial institutions.
