The metaverse is Unbanked Newsletter For weekly level-ups on NFTs, virtual worlds, and more
Dear unbanked nations,
The creation of Inscriptions, or Bitcoin NFTs, has been completed. upsurge Recently.
But the boom is not limited to Bitcoin. Now we have seen an explosion of analog efforts sweeping all the top chains of the cryptocurrency economy.
What is the big idea of the current craze, and why now?
Let’s solve this question for today’s post!

👉 Kraken NFT was created for secure NFT transactions. ✨

The current Inscriptions craze dates back to January 2023, when it was introduced by Casey Rodarmor. ordinal numberIt is a system that creates Bitcoin NFTs by engraving data on individual satoshis, the smallest BTC unit.
Emergence of new on-chain storage technologies have a good reputation There was an immediate explosion of mining activity as people flocked to the novelty of a new kind of native Bitcoin token standard. By the end of February 2023, over 100,000 NFTs had been recorded on the OG blockchain using this system, resulting in a significant surge in fee revenues for Bitcoin miners.
Today, almost a year later, Bitcoin is now 46 million inscriptions and counting. To date, users have spent more than US$105 million to enter their data.
Most Inscriptions to date have been BRC-20, an experimental semi-fungible token standard. Arriving May 2023 Efforts are being made to bring Bitcoin closer to Ethereum ERC-20. Think of DeFi tokens or memecoins. However, it is created in batches on top of the inscription. Notably, earlier this week $ORDI passed BRC-20 for the first time. Market cap: $1 billion mark.
Of course Ordinals and BRC-20 came along to meet the demand. native Bitcoin Token stands in contrast to other tokenization systems, such as Counterparty, which are built on top of Bitcoin but not within Bitcoin. But now we are starting to see a surge in Inscriptions-style transactions on just about every memo chain, including networks like Ethereum and Solana. do There are official native token standards (e.g. ERC-721, pNFT, etc.).

In recent months we have seen more projects generalizing the Ordinals method and emulating it on other chains, which has proven to be relatively simple. And because this work all happens at the transaction level rather than a smart contract, Inscriptions is very inexpensive to create and serve new contracts. public issuance mechanism.
This dynamic laid the groundwork for the popularization of Inscriptions, but some tailwinds also helped fuel their rise.
For example, the recent rise in the price of BTC and the excitement of the BTC ETF have led people to explore new and expanded Bitcoin ecosystems. The inscriptions here are the most popular and most influential at the moment. And BRC-20 tokens like ORDI have been booming recently. at the top Inscription, we have reached escape velocity with people realizing that there are new ways to take advantage of this rising category of crypto assets.
Especially in the Ethereum ecosystem, we have seen the subsequent rise of Inscriptions-style mints. Arrival of Ethscriptions June 2023.
The project has been storing media in Ethereum call data for years, but Ethscriptions offers a new approach inspired by Ordinals that has since influenced similar efforts across other Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks.
For example, courtesy of this EVM inscription dashboard Looking at Hildobby’s posts, we can see that the Polygon network (in purple below) has been particularly active in recent weeks. We can trace these polygon spikes directly. POLS MARKETThe fledgling Polygon Inscriptions marketplace, with thousands of minters now participating.
Note that because chains like Bitcoin and Ethereum have different designs, the inscriptions for each chain are created in different ways, which in turn leads to subtle quality between chains.
In Bitcoin, the inscription is stored in the “witness” portion of the transaction via SegWit, an upgrade first introduced in 2017. This architecture allows Bitcoin’s inscriptions to have very strong persistence guarantees at very low storage costs.
In contrast, Ethereum’s Inscriptions-style mints, such as Ethscriptions, store transactions in what is known as “call data.” This approach offers relatively low storage costs, but currently does not boast the same permanence guarantees as Ethereum’s later Bitcoin Ordinals. Future purge updates Historical state such as calldata may be cleaned up.
In other words, the Inscriptions craze may be a passing fad in smart contract chains, but this possibility does nothing to deny the fact that Bitcoin’s Inscriptions currently offer the best persistence-to-cost ratio for asset creation in any cryptocurrency. ! And that reality will remain true for the foreseeable future.
It is important to keep in mind that the inscription continues: Huge amount of new revenue For Bitcoin miners. But this is also leading to a surge in demand for transaction data, which some hard-line, old-school Bitcoin users say Like Luke DashjourTherefore, we consider these mints as spam attacks.
Then pay attention to Dashjr’s new OCEAN mining operation. install a filtering system Censors the addition of new inscriptions to the blocks being mined. This is the biggest move yet for Ordinals, but on its own it’s not likely to move the needle as much as OG Bitcoiner Eric Wall. Recently described:
“Don’t they want to mine ordinal inscriptions? OK. They keep the profits for the next block. The incentives in blockchain are such that this isn’t really a big problem in and of itself. If *all* miners filter out inscriptions, they will have to accept that inscriptions are not welcome in Bitcoin (perhaps for some reason?). Otherwise, you will have to run your own miner to mine it..”
However, it is unlikely that you will be able to get close to all the miners filtering out the inscriptions. It wouldn’t make economic sense Especially as BTC block rewards continue to decline through halving, most operations are left with an incredible revenue stream.
what is But the culture war between hard-line, original Bitcoiners and the more creative and experimental supporters of Ordinals is likely to intensify. Whether that will eventually lead to a new chain split is yet to be seen, but the battle lines are already drawn here.

If you want to keep up with the inscription craze that will rage over the coming weeks, keep an eye out for the best platforms that facilitate it. I already mentioned Polygon’s POLS Market and here are some highlights as it relates to Ethereum. ethics A market for beginners. Ultimately though the epitaph’s future remains uncertain. smart contract chain Ultimately unnecessary, Bitcoin’s Inscriptions are actually a powerful new native token standard that opens up possibilities previously unavailable on the first blockchain. This reality combined with the impressive persistence/cost ratio is why I will be keeping an eye on the Bitcoin Inscriptions ecosystem nearest here in the future, and I encourage you to do the same!
