YTL announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop AI infrastructure in Malaysia through a $4.3 billion investment deal.
The utilities division of infrastructure giant YTL Power International has announced a partnership with US technology company Nvidia to develop artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Malaysia through a $4.3 billion investment deal.
The two companies will collaborate to build Malaysia’s fastest supercomputer using Nvidia AI chips. YTL will also leverage Nvidia’s AI cloud computing platform to create a practical language model in Malay.
This initiative is poised to strengthen Southeast Asia’s fast-growing AI ecosystem and contribute to Malaysia’s aspirations as a semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse. The initial phase of the collaboration is expected to be operational until mid-2024.
“Malaysia is an important hub for computing infrastructure in Southeast Asia, requiring access to land, facilities and power, and YTL can play a big role in that.”
said Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia.
The AI infrastructure is hosted at YTL’s data center park in Kulai, located in Johor, Malaysia.
Malaysia emerges as AI infrastructure growth hub
The steady expansion of the digital economy has driven significant investment in digital infrastructure across Southeast Asia, with AI and cloud computing technologies playing a pivotal role in driving this trend. Malaysia in particular has seen increased investment of billions of dollars from prominent global semiconductor companies such as Intel and Infineon.
In a recent development, Intel revealed plans to set up a new facility in Malaysia to increase its chip packaging services capacity.
The Penang plant is Intel’s first overseas facility specializing in advanced 3D chip packaging. The company is also building additional chip assembly and testing plants in the country as part of a $7 billion expansion in Southeast Asia.
The new $4.3 billion collaboration between YTL and Nvidia strengthens Malaysia’s momentum in AI infrastructure, contributing to the advancement of the region’s technology landscape.
