Why my blog is on hold (and why I won’t make a final decision until later this year) – Ryan Schultz

Here’s a sample of today’s news headlines from Google News. Damn it’s getting worse wildeveryone.

Today I wrote the following on Primfeed, Second Life’s new social media platform.I haven’t yet chosen to make my Primfeed profile and posts publicly viewable, so you can currently only read them if you already have an account with Primfeed.):

All the shitty political news coming out of America today has me feeling anxious and depressed. I decided that in order to maintain my mental health, I needed to give up the last traditional social media platform I used on a daily basis. Reddit. That means from now on I will only use Primfeed and nothing else. We do not use Reddit, Mastodon, Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram or TikTok.

All corporate social media platforms are becoming toxic cesspools and garbage cans, negatively impacting my mental health. I quit Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter a few years ago and have never cared for TikTok. I haven’t checked out Mastodon in over half a year. Reddit was my last refuge, but alas, not anymore. I am out. (I announced late last year that I would be shutting down my blog, but considering I’m now leaving Reddit, I’ll need some more time to think about that decision. You should also consider whether you want to make your Primfeed profile public..)

2025 is likely to be an even more hectic and confusing year than 2024. You may need to escape to your beloved Second Life more than ever!

Quick update: Last November, my doctor intervened and sent me on sick leave for a few weeks. I then went back to work on half-time sick pay, and this contract currently runs until the end of April 2025. My boss at work has also stepped in to address my current workload and I am no longer working. About a project to install a virtual reality lab in my university library system. I am feeling incredibly exhausted and completely exhausted. It will still take quite some time to rest and recover.

In light of my decision to quit Reddit today (The last traditional social media platform I was still using, even though I hadn’t set up an account (i.e. read-only and anonymous).), Now I have to reevaluate my decision to stop blogging completely late last year. The truth is, I’m still tired, exhausted, and don’t have the time, energy, or inclination to blog. So I honestly don’t know where the blog stands at the moment.

My blog will live on. I have no plans to take it down. I’ll also keep the associated Discord server running since many people are still using it. There are no plans to take down the RyanSchultz.com Discord server. However, we will stop charging existing Patreon supporters starting January 1, 2025 (I am very grateful to those who have supported me financially through Patreon over the last 5-6 years. It was and is still highly regarded).

Right now, you need to focus on your physical, mental and emotional health, and getting back to work full-time. (Excluding VR Lab projects). That’s my priority right now. To help me achieve that focus, I’m avoiding all social media (except Primfeed), all metaverse platforms (except InSpaze on Apple Vision Pro), and my beloved Second Life. It consistently brings me happiness, especially when so much bad news happens in my real life.

Everything else, including this blog, will have to wait. I won’t make a final decision on my blog until I’m in a better position later this year. Thank you for your support over the past 7+ years.
