Top 5 Web3 Games of 2023

While 2022 saw a ton of talent enter the industry, 2023 was the year that saw the first wave of truly impressive web3 games take the spotlight.

Alphas, betas, full releases – this year has been full of things, covering all the best genres.

We have selected the top 5 web3 games of 2023.

#5 Dookie Dash

Short life? yes. Does it have a big impact? Most definitely.

Dookey Dash, which debuted on January 18 and lasted until February 8, kicked off 2023 with Yuga Lab’s first foray into ‘technology-based mining’. Players competed for the highest score in the casual endless runner, with the top prize being the legendary head-to-head Golden Key NFT. The prize was claimed by Twitch streamer Mongraal and later sold for 1,000 ETH ($1.6 million).

This may have been temporary, and the Sewer Pass NFT requirement to play (which cost around $3,000 at the time) greatly limited access, but its sheer historical significance to the web3 game is undeniable.

#4 Released from the chains of the gods

Immutable Games’ marquee title, web3 TCG Gods Unchained, has had a huge year.

In June 2023, the IMX-powered title became the biggest web3 game to date to debut on the Epic Games Store, before partnering with Amazon earlier this month to distribute card packs through its Prime Gaming service, reaching hundreds of people. Millions of gamers worldwide.

In addition to these high-profile partnerships, the Gods Unchained team has been pushing several large updates this year. The game’s sixth and seventh expansion packs were released in March and October 2023 respectively, two new game modes, Chaos Constructed and Sealed, were released in the summer, and significant progress has been made towards iOS and Android releases.

Despite a minor decline in the ESRB’s AO rating, Gods Unchained has enjoyed continued popularity throughout the year, and the team is well-positioned to continue growing in 2024.

#3 World Wide Web

When we introduced Thomas Webb, founder of free-to-play browser-based 16-bit MMO Worldwide Webb, to the NFT London 2022 stage, I had no idea what the next 12 months would hold.

Announced a $10 million Series A round in February 2023, the team immediately began showing results with the concurrent success of competitive MOBA minigame Blockbusterz and the highly anticipated Dungeon playtest in October.

The team also recruited two former AAA personnel to bolster its roster in preparation for a bigger 2024.

Thomas Webb says he and his team are looking to redefine the gaming industry through Worldwide Webb. The past 12 months have shown that this is a goal they can achieve.

#2 Pixel

Browser-based casual MMO Pixels has had an impressive year, but the announcement and subsequent migration to Ronin, finalized in October 2023, takes things to a whole new level.

In just three months, the already popular title has exploded in popularity, with daily players exceeding 100,000 in November, and Ronin reaching over 250,000 daily users and over 1.1 million monthly users in December of this year. .

Phase 2 of the Mocaverse x Pixels Odyssey activation began last week and will feature a prize pool of US$80,000 over the coming weeks.

Pixels is by far the most popular game on web3 right now, and the game continues to soar in 2024 as our partnership with Animoca Brands deepens.

#1 Metalcore

I first spoke with open-world MMOFPS MetalCore developer Studio 369 at NFT.NYC 2022. I played the game for the first time a year later at the same event, and my reaction was similar to many others. For those who have had the privilege of playing the game so far – MetalCore is on a whole other level.

The sheer size and scale of what the MetalCore team is trying to achieve will be a Herculean task for even the most seasoned AAA developer. After years of development and migration to Immutable in March 2023, the game has seen impressive growth in multiple playtests, including headline appearances at GDC and Gamescom, a US$16,000 tournament, and a listing on the Epic Games Store.

MetalCore brings web3 technology to the powerful action of titles like PlanetSide, Battlefield, and Halo, creating a must-play experience for proven gamers and die-hard web3 fans alike. We look forward to seeing what the team can continue to deliver over the year ahead.

The real winners are all of us – the web3 gaming community. There has never been more variety, more fun, and more fun in the blockchain gaming space than there is now, and more is likely to happen in 2024.
