Take on OverDARE: An Upcoming Metaverse Platform Worth Watching

In case you missed Matt Ball’s prediction, check out the teaser trailer for OVERDARE, the upcoming mobile-oriented metaverse platform from Korean PUBG Battlegrounds publisher Krafton.

From the announcement:

This project represents a bold new frontier for a mobile-based interactive platform for user-generated content that allows users to freely express themselves creatively.

Built on Unreal Engine 5 and leveraging generative AI technology, OVERDARE allows users to easily create high-quality games across genres such as action RPGs, sports, and shooters. The platform also offers powerful social features, including avatar customization and in-app chat functionality.

OVERDARE introduces a Create-to-Earn (C2E) system that allows users to purchase and own digital assets created by content creators within the metaverse.

These transactions are supported by NFT and blockchain technology, ensuring transparency and secure transactions. To facilitate this, OVERDARE chose Settlus as its blockchain mainnet for NFT licensing. Settlus specializes in licensing intellectual property in the form of NFTs from Web 2.0 platform creators. The creator earns revenue through the USDC stablecoin developed in the United States.

The graphics in the trailer look great and fun. Especially if these graphics can be implemented in the mobile version. We also value avatar diversity, which is critical for the Metaverse platform to thrive. Building on Unreal by experienced developers in the world of huge multiplayer games like PUBG is also a significant advantage, especially when it comes to scalability.

Potential downsides that are immediately apparent:

Overdare Metaverse Platform

Thank you for your focus on UGC monetization. "Earn by creating" characteristic; But historically speaking, doing so in the first place is problematic. It creates a sense of overutilization (as Richard Bartle explains here), which hinders community building and fun culture. While NFTs and blockchain may be deeply embedded in the platform’s original business plan, several other "cryptocurrency" Platforms have since crashed and disappeared, but none have achieved mass market penetration. (The reasons are explained at length in the book.)

It’s still early days, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with OVERDARE, another entry in the newest Metaverse platform expected this year.
