Solana is releasing the v1.17.31 update to address network congestion and urges validators to use the new version.
Blockchain platform Solana announced that mainnet beta validators on the Solana mainnet are now recommended to utilize version v1.17.31. This version includes several enhancements to alleviate ongoing congestion issues on the network.
The release of version 1.17.31 is the first step in a series of planned updates to address network congestion that has emerged in recent months, according to Rex St John, head of developer relations at Anza Labs. Meanwhile, version 1.18 is currently being tested on Testnet, a network that simulates the main blockchain to identify and resolve any bugs or issues.
Anza Labs, a developer collective focused on the Solana blockchain, announced on April 5 that it is developing a preliminary patch that is currently undergoing effectiveness testing. By April 11, team members said initial improvements were rolling out on testnet and devnet.
This update aims to improve Solana’s stake-weighted QoS reliability. The patch is expected to incrementally improve Solana's usability, but will not fully resolve network issues. This marks the beginning of a series of actions to address the issues facing Solana.

Over the past month, Solana users have been experiencing network performance degradation, with transactions not being incorporated into blocks or becoming unexecutable at processing time.
Network congestion was mainly caused by a surge in spam transactions, with bots attempting to prioritize their work over regular users. This surge comes as the number of transactions linked to the recently launched memecoin has increased, which has placed exceptional demand on the network's block space, limiting access for numerous users. Trading volume soared to $4 billion in March, significantly exceeding 2023's daily volume of less than $500 million.
