Officials from Serbia and the United Arab Emirates have signed an agreement to explore new use cases for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and technology.
The two countries will prioritize consumer safety and pursue joint AI research and development under similar ideals. The new bilateral agreement, signed at the World Government Summit in Dubai, is Serbia’s first attempt to explore joint AI research outside the European Union.
The Balkan nation, led by Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, has signaled its intention to utilize the UAE’s Large Language Model (LLM) for local use cases. In 2023, the UAE announced plans to make its LLMs less dependent on services from the US, Europe and China, citing national security and cultural concerns.
Serbian officials who attended the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony included Dubravko Culibrk, head of the Serbian AI Research and Development Institute, and Mihailo Jovanovic, Minister of Information and Communication.
Official details are yet to be released, but Serbian officials appear ready to follow the UAE’s stance of localizing LLMs to suit cultural differences and remove language barriers.
“The UAE has developed its own language model with the purpose of teaching a computer something, sending it data, and then processing that data and providing answers to various questions,” Brnabić said.
In the future, Serbian researchers and AI companies from Balkan countries will be able to use localized LLMs under the MOU without regional restrictions.
The delegations from Serbia and the UAE, led by Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, confirmed their commitment to responsible AI development while prioritizing consumer safety and privacy.
