OSgrid, the popular OpenSim-based virtual world, has been officially re-released to the public after a long period of maintenance. The return of Grid marks an important milestone for the OpenSim community and provides users with what administrators describe as “a more professional and stable experience.”
The grid went down in early March due to issues with user inventory files.

“We are excited to announce the official reopening of OSgrid,” the OSgrid team said in an announcement posted today. “This slightly extended downtime allowed us to come back stronger.”
Users returning to OSgrid must follow several important technical steps to ensure a smooth transition, Grid said. All returning villagers must clear all texture and inventory caches in the viewer before logging in. Local owners must also update to the latest code available on the OSgrid website.
Local owners must also reload the OAR file using a specific command that forces the asset to reload. oar –force-assets load filename.oar
However, to maintain system stability, inventory restoration through IAR files is temporarily delayed.
Grid has also launched a solution to the common cloud avatar problem in LBSA Plaza, which provides users with the shape folders they need via a clickable question mark.
OSgrid, the oldest and largest OpenSim grid, has long served as a central hub for the open source virtual world community, allowing users to connect home-based areas for free and serving as a testbed for OpenSimulator development.
Will it be the biggest grid again? This is likely, as it has previously returned from a lengthy hiatus.
