OpenSim Starts New Year with Record High Land Coverage – Hypergrid Business

The total land area of OpenSim’s public grid is: There were 131,511 standard regions this month, an increase of more than 1,000 from the previous month, an all-time high. However, the overall number of active users decreased by more than 3,500.

Part of the decline is due to the OpenSim Community Conference taking place last month, which boosted the numbers. Several grids also failed to report statistics this month, experienced outages or were shut down, but there were no major problems. In most cases, the overall decline in numbers was due to the winter holidays.

Reduction by 2024

You’ll notice that this article is considerably shorter than previous months. I’m planning to scale back my OpenSim coverage this year to have more time for other projects. If you have a press release, you can send it to me, but the closer it is to a publishable format, the quicker I can post it on the site.

I currently track a total of 2,653 public power grids, of which 334 are active and 258 have released statistics this month. If you have a statistics page that you do not want to track, please email maria@hypergridbusiness.com. The grid will then be mentioned in this report each month to provide additional visibility to both search engines and users.

Monthly OpenSim land area is calculated. (Hypergrid business data as of October 2023.)

Our statistics do not include many of the grids running on DreamGrid, the OpenSim distribution, as these tend to be private grids.

OpenSim is a free, open-source virtual world platform, similar to Second Life, that allows non-technical people to quickly and inexpensively create virtual worlds and teleport to other virtual worlds. Those with technical skills can run OpenSim worlds on their servers for free using DreamGrid, the official OpenSim installer for the more technically minded, or another distribution, with commercial hosting starting at less than $5 per region. It’s possible.

A list of OpenSim hosting providers is here. Download the recommended Firestorm viewer here and learn where to get content for your OpenSim world or region here.

On the 15th of each month, shortly after the statistical report comes out, we will send out a newsletter containing all the OpenSim news from the previous month. You can subscribe here or fill out the form below.

Sellers looking to sell content go to the grid with the most potential customers. Event organizers looking for the largest audience – you get the idea.
