You may have noticed a lack of content on my blog lately.
I’m sorry that due to personal and professional obligations, I won’t be able to write on the blog for some time to come. It’s not for lack of news. In fact, we’ve had a few people ask us to specifically address the Rec Room closure, for example. Or maybe the once mighty Fortnite is losing money. In general, hardware and software companies that provide immersive experiences appear to be going through what the Gartner consulting group politely describes as “the nadir of disillusionment.”
But unfortunately, at the moment I don’t have the time or energy to dedicate to documenting the latest happenings in what is clearly a “metaverse winter” (or, to put it even more harshly, a “virtual reality winter”). Many companies appear to be delaying or even abandoning further iterations of virtual/augmented reality headsets and related equipment in an all-out push toward more wearable but still less functional glasses.
When July 1, 2026 rolls around and I am finally able to begin my research and study leave at the University of Manitoba, I hope to be able to pause, take a breath, and survey the current landscape as I research and create open educational resources in the metaverse. The timing seems very good to me. There is clearly a change in mood. Maybe you will be lucky enough to properly document this important moment.
But not today and not for a while. Thank you for your patience while I now deal with what is before me.
