Crew Packs are a new addition to the game’s ecosystem, featuring randomly generated crew members that unlock SAGE star-based and other game mechanics.
Players can acquire followers with different traits, personalities, and skills to support their fleets and infrastructure. They also become in-game avatars that can perform various gameplay loops, ultimately affecting their effectiveness as new game expansions introduce crew progression systems and careers.
Finally, crew members are categorized by rarity tier, similar to the Star Atlas ship rarity system, from Common to Ideal. Crew members with higher rarity are given greater aptitude in quantity and power, allowing them to gain experience in their specializations more quickly.
Speaking of gameplay elements, let’s take a look at something captains will definitely want to know about: the aptitudes their crew members can specialize in, or in the game, “different specialties.”
There are seven flight attendant aptitudes that can help develop a flight attendant’s natural talents and abilities.
- command: These aptitudes will increase your crew’s experience when they take on the roles of Admiral, Commander, or Captain.
- flight: These aptitudes will increase your crew’s experience when taking on the roles of navigator and pilot.
- engineering: These aptitudes increase a crew’s experience gains when assigned to engineering roles.
- medical treatment: These aptitudes increase the experience gained when crew members are assigned to medical roles.
- scientist: These aptitudes increase crew members’ experience when assigned to scientific roles.
- operator: These aptitudes increase crew experience when assigned to weapon operator, drone operator, or equipment operator roles.
- hospitality: These aptitudes will enhance your crew’s experience as they take on a variety of support roles, including chef, mixologist, entertainer, office worker, security, manager, supervisor, and janitor.
It goes without saying that having crew members with natural talents that fit your fleet’s specialization and composition will greatly contribute to the success of your endeavors in the galaxy, so be careful when choosing your talents!
Crew members are divided into rarity tiers that reflect the overall ship rarity system in Star Atlas, ranging from common crew members to ideal tier followers. The rarer a crew member is, the more diverse and powerful their aptitudes are, and they gain experience at a rate faster.
The image below shows the various aptitude bonuses for each crew member’s rarity level.
As you can see, the crew with higher rarity has the advantage of being able to fill various roles in the game more efficiently due to their diverse and strong aptitudes. Nevertheless, it is important not to underestimate the common crew in the right position. Strategy, patience, and hard work can beat talent!
Now that you know how your crew’s natural tendencies and talents work, let’s show you how working hard to train them can reward you.
Crew progression is the backbone of the Star Atlas RPG system. As crew members perform tasks related to various in-game aptitudes, they gain experience and level up in that specific area.
Every level they gain generates points that can be expanded in the specific Aptitude Perk Tier System (APTS). This system, linked to the development of each aptitude category, unlocks specific crew-related perks that provide cumulative bonuses within the ship.
In this way, you can shape your crew’s progression in a number of different ways, combining bonuses from different APTS to maximize your ship’s efficiency. For example, your Punav captain may focus on gaining resource management perks in his Command APTS, while later developing procurement perks in his Hospitality APTS to maximize food usage efficiency.
Since every crew member can learn every in-game perk, the possibilities are endless, limited only by your hard work and dedication! Additionally, there is no “maximum level cap” for in-game perks, with only diminishing returns on the benefits of investing more and more points into a given perk.
We’re sure you’re curious to see what other perks crew members can get, so feel free to check out the images below.
As you can see in the image, each APTS has 4 different perks that you can choose to spend your points on. Some perks are only unlocked at higher levels. For example, Reflex in Operator APTS requires you to level up in this APTS before you can spend your points on that perk.
But don’t worry, you can save your points as you level up and use them all on the perks you want, or spread them out on other perks as you progress. Also, while I don’t want to give too many surprises, there may be a re-allocation mechanism for perk points as long as some conditions are met for locations, fees, and specialists with certain skills.
It’s up to you how you build your crew!
Another important detail is that the perks have different effects depending on the Star Atlas environment, so you will need to plan accordingly to maximize effectiveness in both SAGE and Unreal environments.
Finally, please keep in mind that while we want to train your crew along a variety of progression paths as much as you do, the implementation of leveling mechanics and progression systems will follow the development of the overall Star Atlas roadmap. All of these mechanics are subject to change as development progresses.
Nevertheless, the progression and experience systems are some of the most interesting parts of the Crew Mechanics gameplay, and we will be introducing them to the game ecosystem as soon as we complete the MVP!
Deploying crew members into the Star Atlas game ecosystem immediately opens up new use cases that will form the basis for many future game mechanics.
As soon as you acquire a crew member, you will also gain a new worker to perform crafting tasks at the Star Atlas SAGE. Star based gamesYou can increase your supply chain efficiency in-game. Additionally, your crew art will serve as your Star Atlas Player Profile Picture (PFP), allowing you to represent your favorite species and faction both inside and outside the ecosystem.
Nonetheless, the crew will truly shine when the next in-game expansion is released. Players will be able to use them as in-game avatars when Unreal Engine 5 R2. 2 releases later this year, and they will be able to crew their own ships while training and collecting gear in RPG style via a mobile app that will be included in a 2024 update.
As development progresses further, players can expect a fully-developed MMO RPG system where crew members will have progression systems, skills, and career paths, and will become the center of the game mechanics of the Star Atlas metaverse.
In addition to having aptitudes, names, and abilities, each crew card belongs to a different species in the Galia Expanse, which influences their backstory, and this will be implemented in future game updates to create a unique story for each crew member. Check out the list of species below and build your crew with members that reflect your in-game values and aspirations!

True or not, this topic is passionately discussed in every bar in the Middle Sector. (Available only through obtaining crew members of higher rank!)
Now that you know more about crews, let’s learn how to acquire them to build your fleet!
The first way to acquire crew members is by owning a Star Atlas ship and receiving airdrops of Singular Crew Packs. Depending on how many crew members are slotted on your ship, you will receive a 1:1 matching airdrop of Crew Packs.
The tier of these individual crew packs depends on the rarity of the ship.
- General and non-general vessels — Silver Single Crew Pack
- A rare and magnificent ship — Gold Single Crew Pack
- Legendary and Anomaly ships — Platinum Single Crew Pack
Let’s understand this better with an example. If Dominic owns a “rare” ship like the Pearce F4, he will receive a Gold-tier individual crew pack corresponding to the size of the ship’s crew. Since the F4 has a crew of 4 (1 Pilot, 1 Navigator, 2 Guards), Dominic will end up receiving 4 crew cards.
But don’t worry! If you don’t have one of Star Atlas’ powerful ships, you can still assemble your own crew by purchasing standard Crew Packs.
There are three types of crew packs: silver, goldand platinum. Each pack contains five crew cards of varying rarity from a variety of Star Atlas species. The prices and probabilities of crew drops associated with each pack are detailed in the image below.
Once released, Crew Packs will be available for purchase directly from the Marketplace, with each priced as follows:
- Silver Pack: 25USDC
