briefly
The NEAR Infrastructure Committee (IC) released its 2024 summary and outlined future development plans, including wallet improvements, chain abstraction support, and decentralized AI infrastructure development.
The NEAR Infrastructure Committee (IC), an organization dedicated to advancing the layer 1 blockchain NEAR ecosystem, has released its 2024 summary and outlined its future development plans.
Launched in April 2024, IC has since evolved into an open subsidy mechanism within the NEAR ecosystem. The committee has had a significant impact, supporting the infrastructure that underpins the entire ecosystem. In 2024, we approved 24 of the 99 proposals submitted. Key achievements include support for major native wallets such as NEAR Mobile Wallet, HERE Wallet, Nightly Wallet, and Meteor Wallet, as well as the conversion of MyNEARWallet to Meteor. These initiatives have enabled innovations such as HERE Wallet’s HOT wallet, which has become one of the most used decentralized applications (dApps) on Web3, Meteor Wallet’s successful Harvest Moon launch, and Nightly Social Login feature.
IC also improved network stability and performance by shifting RPC services to decentralized providers such as Lava. We’ve also onboarded new providers like FastNEAR and BlockPi to significantly improve RPC node response time and uptime. IC has funded NEARBlocks, the primary explorer for the NEAR blockchain, and has partnered with several analytics providers, including Token Terminal, Chainspect, and Intear, to strengthen its core infrastructure and analytics capabilities. These efforts are just a few examples of the Council’s ongoing contributions to the NEAR ecosystem.
NEAR Infrastructure Council: Key Priorities for 2025
Based on comprehensive feedback from builders and the evolving needs of the ecosystem, IC’s focus for 2025 will be to continue supporting infrastructure and deliver on the ongoing commitments of previous years. This includes, but is not limited to, support for wallets like the previously mentioned Fast NEAR and NEARBlocks.
The committee will also focus on establishing working groups to manage accounts, proactively respond to proposals, drive innovation, and draft requests for proposals (RFPs), making ecosystem development more proactive rather than reactive. We will aim for it. RFPs are expected to be published regularly throughout the year.
Additionally, the committee plans to work on the integration of NEAR with other ecosystems, including implementing single sign-on (SSO) from the NEAR wallet to the Solana application and strengthening on- and off-roads. Support is also provided for developing tools and services that improve NEAR accessibility and interoperability with other blockchain ecosystems, such as Multichain Explorer, Oracle, Omnitoken, and Omnibalance. The Commission will also invest in underlying infrastructure to strengthen NEAR’s role in supporting decentralized AI applications across the ecosystem.
NEAR is a decentralized development platform set to utilize a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism and implement a sharding architecture to improve transaction throughput. The block generation process, called Doomslug, and the proposed sharding scheme, called Nightshade, are designed to work together to scale the network and reduce congestion.
NEAR also prioritizes ease of use for both developers and users by incorporating several key innovations to streamline application development and simplify user onboarding.
