Despite banning NFTs within popular sandbox title Minecraft in July 2022, developer Mojang and publisher Microsoft World CoinOpenAI is a biometric cryptocurrency project led by CEO Sam Altman.
The integration will allow Minecraft server owners to limit access to only players who possess a World ID, a digital proof-of-humanity passport created by Worldcoin that requires an in-person iris scan.

Minecraft vs NFTs
In July 2022, Mojang announced a complete ban on all NFT integrations with lead titles, citing issues with “scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.”
This has had a huge impact on various web3 projects. Chief among them, NFT Worlds, generated hundreds of millions of dollars in trading volume, and the project has since pivoted to creating its own voxel realm.
Mojang’s approval of the Worldcoin integration is the first sign of a thaw in the team’s position in nearly 18 months.
Sam Altman and Microsoft
Microsoft has been investing heavily in AI over the past few years. It first signed a large partnership and then purchased a 49% stake in Sam Altman’s company, OpenAI, which created ChatGPT.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has publicly supported Altman on several occasions since Sam’s dramatic firing and rehiring in November 2023, but this is the first sign that Microsoft is open to exploring ways to collaborate with Altman’s Worldcoin venture.
The Worldcoin x Minecraft integration does not utilize the native $WLD token, but only uses World ID technology to verify player authenticity. This maintains integration under Minecraft’s strict anti-NFT EULA policy and allows US players to access these World ID restricted servers without being exposed to $WLD tokens.
