Mark Zuckerberg aligns creation AI and research teams to launch AI-based products

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today unveiled a strategic move to bring the company’s AI research team closer to its business-focused generative AI team. This plan is evaluated as a measure by Meta to incorporate artificial intelligence into its products.

As part of this initiative, Meta is keen to expand its infrastructure, aiming to acquire approximately 350,000 H100 GPUs from chip designer Nvidia by the end of this year. Zuckerberg shared insights on Instagram and Threads, indicating that Meta is on track to have a total of around 600,000 GPUs, enough to compete with some of the largest systems in the tech industry.

Despite admitting to using Nvidia GPUs, Meta has remained secretive about additional GPU manufacturers, sparking curiosity among industry observers. Additionally, according to multiple media sources, the company is developing internally developed GPU-like processors.

The move comes as Meta ramps up its efforts in the generative AI space. The company has formed a ‘Generative AI’ team in late 2022 to build on the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and lead the field. Meta has already released an advertising tool capable of generating visual backgrounds, along with a commercial version of the Llama large language model. When requesting a text message. The company has also introduced a “Meta AI” chatbot that can be accessed through Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Zuckerberg said in a post Thursday that Meta is currently in the process of training a third version of its Llama model to improve its AI capabilities. Crucially, Zuckerberg linked these AI investments to Meta’s overarching vision for an augmented or virtual reality (AR/VR)-based metaverse. The CEO said AI integration is essential to the Metaverse experience and that new devices, such as glasses, will be needed for consumers to fully engage with AI-based applications.

Yesterday, Nicola Mendelsohn, Head of Meta’s Global Business Group, delivered this promise during a panel session at the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos.

While acknowledging the challenges, Mendelsohn emphasized Meta’s determination to realize its ambitious vision for the metaverse, estimating that it would take roughly “a good 10 years” to achieve the company’s fully realized vision. As companies expand their technology arsenals, the impact these developments have on user experience and the broader technology landscape remains significant.
