Inferno drainer scam is back

Despite the Inferno Drainer malware reportedly set to end in 2023, new evidence has emerged showing that threat actors linked to the scam are once again targeting the KuCoin community.

A malicious SMS message shared by CryptoShields.eth falsely claims to entitle recipients to a KCS airdrop, despite no official announcement from KuCoin about the event. Although the identity of the perpetrator remains unclear, its connection to the Inferno Drainer scam has raised alarm within the cryptocurrency community.

The investigation was further complicated by the fact that the domains mentioned in the SMS messages were registered through Squarespace. KuCoin has yet to issue a public statement on the incident, so questions remain about the scope of the potential data breach and the platform’s response to the security threat.

Wallet breach risk

The fraudulent website involved in the scam hosts continuous KCS airdrops, luring users with the promise of free tokens. However, to participate, users must provide a signature via a non-custodial wallet for “proof of ownership.” This practice raises a red flag because scammers often inject malicious code into such websites, putting users’ funds at risk of being stolen or compromised.
