Bit Heroes Quest stands out in many ways, including the freedom to include any theme in the game and the variety of game modes. However, one of the visual themes inherent in the game is BIT.
Pixel art is an art form that uses single pixels to construct 2D digital images block by block, making it one of the most unique features of gaming.
To talk about the art, inspiration, and challenges of Bit Heroes Quest, we brought in Octo, the project’s art director.
Would you like to introduce yourself?
“Hello! I’m Octo, the lead technical artist on the Bit Heroes Quest art team.”
What do you like most about the art in Bit Heroes Quest?
“One of the most enjoyable aspects of creating pixel art is the nostalgia it brings. I remember the first video games I started playing when I was a kid on old NES and Atari2600 consoles. There’s a connection between the visual simplicity of the game and your inner child that always brings back fond memories.”
Have technological advances influenced the way you approach pixel art? Or do you think there is value in preserving traditional skills?
“Over the past few years, it has been very interesting to approach our art from different angles, following current trends in both video games and web development. “Technology has certainly advanced, giving us access to more reference materials and more advanced software, but thanks to block resolution, our approach to pixel painting has not been affected.”
What are the unique challenges you face when working with pixel art compared to other art styles?
“Pixel art has its own natural limitations in that you work at low resolutions. As an artist, you have a limited number of pixels to work with, so you have to challenge your creativity and skillfully utilize each pixel to convey complex designs. It is also necessary to leave room for interpretation. “Pixels can be deceptively simple, but when you look closely, you discover an incredible amount of detail and craftsmanship packed into an 8-bit package.”
Is there a design strategy or principles you follow to ensure that a diverse and interesting collection of items is constantly being added to the game?
“Absolutely! Above all, I try to foster a healthy critique environment within the art team to motivate all artists to stay alert and bring fresh ideas. The gaming community also plays an important role in creating new items for us. is always listening to feedback to shape our next content updates.”
How closely do you work with other members of the development team, including game designers and programmers, to ensure that the art blends seamlessly with the gameplay mechanics?
“Game development is inherently a collaborative process, so you should always have one foot in the artistic process and one foot in another area. Artists also work closely with game designers on a daily basis to ensure items serve their purpose within the game’s functionality and narrative. We also communicate with the code team, especially during integrations, to fine-tune the balance between visual aesthetics and optimization.”
We’ll guide you through the creative process as you design your game’s characters and environments. How do you start a new work and how does it progress from concept to final implementation?
“For every new event within our scope, we first brainstorm ideas and proposals at the concept stage. We try to maintain a fun and relaxed atmosphere during this stage so that we don’t inhibit our minds and create amazing works of art. We also create many visual libraries and mood boards during this concept phase to help finalize the designs for all characters and scenarios before choosing a paint brush. After several renders and detail iterations, our new game items were finally approved by Art Direction and sent out for the Code team to implement into the game.”
Bit Heroes Quest includes both pets and mounts. Do you have a preference between creating different designs? What unique considerations does each type bring to the creative process?“Pets and mounts both have their own charms, but I’d pick mount creatures as my personal favorite. Because it simply allows more space for character development. Sprites and animations have become more sophisticated, allowing us to discuss their origins, diet, behavior, etc. in detail.”
If you were a character in Bit Heroes, what kind of unique visual customization options would players have for your character?
My characters will be new and old-fashioned. Medieval items with futuristic treatments like electric swords, holographic shields, and more. It’s something along the lines of a cyberpunk article.
If you could wield an ancient artifact from the Beat Heroes Quest game that symbolizes your artistic influence, what would it be called, and what special powers would it be granted?
I will be getting my hands on the Primordial Codex, a tome of mythical ancient records that can be crafted to amplify both offensive and defensive skills based on your mainhand element.
Of all the art you’ve created for Bit Heroes Quest, do you have a favorite character, pet, mount, or piece of gear that you’re particularly proud of? Why did it stand out to you?
One of the special events that the entire art team and I personally enjoy creating is Halloween. For my favorite character, I would choose Melvin in zombie horde mode.
How often should artists play the game to become familiar with its main concepts?
I love spending time playing games on a relaxing Sunday. A few hours is all it takes to get a sense of the overall look and feel of a particular game.
What theme zone do you want to create in Beat Heroes Quest?
Seasonal events related to retro fashion are also fun to do.
Imagine Bit Heroes’ quests set in environments inspired by your favorite real-life works of art. What kind of world will it be, and how will players navigate its challenges?
It’s hard to choose, but you’ll probably want to try Munch’s “Scream” or Vincent van Gogh’s expressionist art style and see how it translates to Bitverse and get the community’s reaction!
Thank you so much to Octo for giving us the opportunity to learn more about the art of Bit Heroes Quest. Please keep creating amazing pixel items for us!
