Ethereum developers gathered to discuss improvements to the Dencun mainnet and ACDE currency #181.

Ethereum developers will meet via Zoom for the All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #181 on February 15, 2024 to deliberate and coordinate changes to the Ethereum Execution Layer (EL) to shape the future of the Ethereum network. Convened. Tim Beiko, Protocol Director at the Ethereum Foundation (EF), chairs the bi-weekly meeting.

One of the important points of discussion this week is the imminent mainnet activation of the Dencun upgrade.

The developers, along with EF Developer Operations Engineer Barnabas Busa, provided an update on their preparations, detailing node synchronization to the Ethereum mainnet in anticipation of a shadow fork. This shadow fork serves as a testing environment that mirrors the activity of the existing blockchain, ensuring smooth deployment of upgrades.

According to discussions, the final client version of Dencun is expected to be released by the end of next week, completing the mainnet shadow fork by February 23rd.

Additionally, retrospective Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) were also included on the agenda, with particular attention to EIPs 7610 and 7523. EIP 7610, discussed by Hedera Hashgraph engineer and Besu client maintainer Danno Ferrin, seeks to modify smart contract creation rules. Applies retroactively to all previous Ethereum blocks.

This proposal aims to increase security and simplify client code. Meanwhile, EIP 7523, which aims to ban empty accounts from the network after a merger, was deliberated, highlighting its potential to reduce technical debt in the future.

Ethereum Developer Explores Pectra Upgrade

In conjunction with the Pectra upgrade, developers discussed several EIPs proposed for inclusion. Notable among them are EIP 5806, 7557, 2395, and 5920. Each proposal has been thoroughly vetted, taking into account security implications, gas cost considerations, and potential implications for future upgrades, including the highly anticipated Verkle code changes.

In addition to specific EIPs, the developers also covered broader topics such as inclusion lists to prevent transaction censorship and the overall timing of Pectra upgrades. Emphasis was placed on reaching agreement on the scope and schedule of the upgrades to ensure timely delivery while maintaining operational efficiency.

ACDE Call #181 is widely regarded as the Ethereum community’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation. Developers work to improve the robustness and scalability of the Ethereum network by fostering open dialogue and collaboration and paving the way for a more decentralized and efficient blockchain ecosystem. As preparations for the upcoming upgrade intensify, stakeholders are eagerly anticipating Ethereum’s evolving roadmap to come to fruition.
