Digital Pilipinas Festival 2023 showcases the Philippines as a digital bridge to ASEAN.

The Digital Pilipinas Festival, held from November 20 to 24, 2023 at SMX Aura in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, focused on the theme “The World Meets ASEAN in Digital Pilipinas.” Hosted by Amor Maclang, the event served as a platform to showcase the Philippines as a digital hub connecting ASEAN and the world.

In a CoinGeek Backstage interview with Maclang, she was keen to point out the global importance of ASEAN, saying, “Within seven years, 40% of global GDP will be in ASEAN.” Nonetheless, many countries lack a comprehensive strategy for the Indo-Pacific or ASEAN.

With its young population, rapid adoption of new technologies, and mobile-first approach, the Philippines serves as a digital beachhead for the region. “If you cannot visit all 10 ASEAN countries, the Philippines is the preferred digital bridge,” Maclang said.

At this festival, simultaneous discussions were held on various digital fields such as fintech, insurtech, proptech, cybersecurity, and e-government. The goal was to promote the digitalization of small and medium-sized enterprises and celebrate the first Philippine Investment Week with participation from more than 30 countries.

Maclang’s vision for an integrated and digitally advanced ASEAN emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping the region’s future. In line with its vision, Digital Pilipinas launched the International Digital Economy ASEAN with the theme “Wherever it goes, we all go.” The plan aims to strengthen regional ties and promote cooperation.

A notable highlight of the festival was the partnership with nChain, a global blockchain technology company. “We are excited to announce that nChain will indeed be our blockchain technology partner,” Maclang said. The plan is to integrate blockchain across various industries and processes to ensure immutability and integrity.

Paving the way for technological advancement and global cooperation

Meanwhile, Dr. Alexander “Sasha” Titov, Director of International Partnerships at Digital Pilipinas, shared insights on the festival’s international partnerships and the important role of blockchain technology in shaping the country’s digital landscape.

Dr. Titov, who is responsible for promoting international cooperation and business development, emphasized Digital Pilipinas’ mission to bring cutting-edge technologies to the Philippines. “I am responsible for international partnerships and business development, and bringing the best technology from around the world to the Philippines,” he explained. Additionally, as a co-founder of Astrolabe, he pointed to the company’s role in promoting investments in the technology sector and other industries.

Featuring a hands-on action phase, the festival witnessed several important partnerships. Dr. Titov cited engagements with organizations such as the International Digital Economies Association, UK London Tech Week, Tech Filipino Advocate and the G100 Association of Global Women Leaders. These collaborations aim to strengthen the country’s technology ecosystem and attract international business.

Another notable highlight was the signing of an agreement on the halal economy, signaling expansion beyond traditional foods.

“We consider the halal economy to be relevant not only to food, but also to finance,” says Dr. Titov. “Because our core, which we started last year, is fintech.”

Discussing digitalization in the Philippines, Dr. Titov emphasized Digital Pilipinas’ comprehensive approach across key industries, including agriculture, education, small and medium-sized enterprises, e-commerce, and cybersecurity. Through collaboration with various partners and international expertise, no aspect is overlooked.

Regarding nChain’s participation, Dr. Titov expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “nChain is an amazing partner for Digital Pilipinas.” He emphasized the versatility of blockchain technology in solving problems in a variety of industries. “Blockchain can also help solve issues and problems in the areas of halal, disability, data registration, transparency and health,” he explained.
