China’s Metaverse takes shape as a new standardization working group

The concept of the Metaverse, a virtual shared space where users can interact in a variety of ways, is gaining attention around the world. In response to this trend, the Chinese government has taken active steps to establish standards for the Chinese Metaverse platform.

This month, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced the formation of the Metaverse Standardization Working Group. The group is made up of Chinese universities, government agencies, and technology giants such as Tencent, Huawei, and Baidu. The group aims to shape China’s Metaverse future by combining expertise to establish rules for the Metaverse platform.

MIIT emphasized standards that reflect industry development and management needs. Establishing clear guidelines and standards will allow for a more structured and safer environment for users to explore the metaverse. Additionally, feedback on the group’s proposals will be available until February 18, highlighting the collaborative approach to establishing these standards.

Key components of China’s Web3 strategy

This plan is consistent with China’s Web3 strategy, which focuses on cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain and metaverse. China aims to explore potential applications of these technologies and demonstrate its commitment to leading the digital sector.

Last September, four ministries, including MIIT, jointly announced a three-year action plan to achieve innovation in metaverse technology. Targeting 2025, the country aims to make major advances in metaverse technologies and industrial and government applications, and to become a key driver of the world’s strongest digital economy.

We also plan to foster three to five globally influential eco-enterprises and create a variety of new business ventures, models and formats in the consumer and public services sectors. This highlights the government’s strong emphasis on developing and utilizing metaverse technology.

Experts predict that these plans will accelerate the development of China’s metaverse industry. This potentially positions the country as a global hub for metaverse technology. And through focus and investment in this emerging field, Chinese companies and institutions can surpass Western developments in this field.

Additionally, the formation of China’s Metaverse Standardization Working Group and Web3 Strategy demonstrates China’s goal to lead the Metaverse. By setting standards and investing in R&D, China is building a strong Chinese metaverse industry.
