ChatGPT can teach you LSL and even write your code for you. – Hypergrid Business

When I first tried ChatGPT late last year, I noticed a lot of people were using it to write code. Python. JavaScript. Even mechanical languages. So naturally I asked if they knew LSL, the Linden scripting language used in Second Life and OpenSim.

It said no. I was disappointed but not really surprised. After all, LSL is not one of the major languages. You probably don’t have enough training data.

Today, for some fortuitous reason, I decided to try again, and not only did I know LSL, but I was also able to explain how it works. Did I phrase the question wrong last time?

ChatGPT can teach you LSL and even write your code for you. – Hypergrid Business

It explains the differences between LSL and OSSL (OpenSim Scripting Language) and also allows you to write OSSL-related scripts.

WARNING: NOT PERFECT

We are still working on the ChatGPT beta release.

Make mistakes.

So test all your code carefully. However, if there are any errors, you can ask ChatGPT to correct them.

And even if you don’t understand why it did something or if you prefer a different approach, you can also let them know.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is working to improve accuracy, and the billions of dollars Microsoft just invested will certainly help.

From what I’ve heard, developers already know that ChatGPT can significantly speed up their workflows, but it’s not a complete replacement. yet.

When I asked Jester Knox to rewrite his very simple greeting script, it took me quite a while. I forgot an important step on my first attempt. When I pointed that out, ChatGPT apologized and rewrote the script adding the steps. It then asked you to use a different command than the one you selected.

In total, it took me four attempts to get the exact script I was looking for.

My verdict?

Today, ChatGPT is like a very young programmer who still makes a lot of mistakes and has tremendous confidence in his abilities, but is at least willing to admit when he’s wrong.

I can definitely see the potential in creating simple scripts, especially if you need to tweak them a lot.

But the most important thing here is not what you can do now, but what you can do tomorrow.

“Today’s largest AI compute scale is doubling every six months, far surpassing Moore’s Law,” Google CEO Sunchar Pichal said in a post last week.

So, if a big part of your daily workflow involves writing LSL or OSSL scripts, it might be time to look into how ChatGPT can speed things up. For example, you can ask them to add comments to existing code. You can ask for an overview of your coding project. You may be asked to write a document or create a slightly different version of the script. If you don’t understand how something works, you can ask them to explain it.

You can also paste an existing script from the Outworldz free script collection, ask ChatGPT what the script does, and then ask them to suggest some ways to use this script in OpenSim grid.
