Celestia deploys Blobstream data attestation bridge on primary mainnet

Modular blockchain network Celestia has announced that its data proof bridge Blobstream is now accessible on-chain, starting with the Ethereum Layer 2 network Base mainnet, following an announcement on social media platform X.

Developers now have the opportunity to integrate the latest Ethereum rollup framework with Blobstream to accelerate the expansion of its diverse ecosystem.

Developed by Succinct Labs, Blobstream acts as a one-way data verification bridge, facilitating the use of Celestia for modular data verification on the Ethereum Layer 2 and Layer 3 networks. We use data availability proofs and Merkle roots derived from batched Celestia block data to verify the presence of rolled-up data on the Celestia platform.

Built on Celestia, operating on a CometBFT-based proof-of-stake (PoS) system, Blobstream matches the security assumptions supported by the Celestia platform. However, Data Proof Bridge is currently in its early stages and is considered experimental software. Users are advised to use Blobstream with caution and at their own risk.

Native Layer 3 allows developers to easily create high-throughput block space by leveraging Celestia as the underlying infrastructure.

Before the introduction of Celestia, developers creating complex on-chain applications faced constraints due to throughput limitations. As a result, they often had to switch to alternative layer 1 solutions or build blockchain networks using reliable but high-overhead data availability solutions.

Blobstream allows developers to continue building within their existing ecosystem. You can build customizable, high-throughput block spaces without having to form committees or rely on centralized servers for data availability.

Celestia’s Blobstream integration improves Ethereum layer 2 and layer 3 scalability.

Data availability continues to represent a key challenge in scaling the current Ethereum ecosystem, especially as activity on layer 2 solutions increases and new types of applications emerge on the blockchain.

Blobstream provides a path for layer 2 developers on Ethereum to seamlessly integrate with Celestia, which is expected to be a pioneering data availability layer with data availability sampling (DAS) capabilities. Acting as a modular data availability layer, Celestia optimizes data throughput by providing specialized blob space at a price that is decoupled from Ethereum gas costs and unrelated executions.

Recently, Celestia has leveraged Blobstream technology to connect Celestia’s modular data availability layer to Ethereum and EthStorage, leveraging a proprietary data availability proof algorithm that samples data over time to serve as a persistent storage solution for data availability blobs. This integration aims to provide a comprehensive long-term data availability solution tailored to Ethereum’s Layer 2 and Layer 3 platforms.
