BRC-20 token creator Domo opposes UniSat's fork proposal and defends 'safety first'

Creator of the Bitcoin BRC-20 token standard DomoOrdinal has publicly expressed its opposition on

Domo is concerned that a hasty update to the BRC-20 standard could be reckless and potentially harmful to the BRC20 community. He delivered his appeal, urging the community to reject the proposed fork and advocate for a non-profit, safety-first approach to protocol maintenance.

“I believe it would be reckless to rush these updates in BRC20. (They) are ignoring their fellow indexers and potentially causing harm to the broader community of BRC20 users,” Domo said in the post.

Domo also highlighted recent bugs associated with the Ordinals 0.8 and 0.9 updates, citing them as an example of the growing complexity in integrating new updates into the BRC-20 standard. He explained that it may not be safe to incorporate these changes without a robust testing, tuning and validation infrastructure currently in development.

In response, UniSat clarified that the proposed ‘fork’ was not actually a split in the protocol, but rather a ‘split’ to accommodate the Ordinals Jubilee upgrade. This split aims to separate assets from BRC-20 version 0.9 from the new upgraded assets while keeping them within the same blockchain.

UniSat has also released an upcoming white paper detailing protocol improvements and providing insight into UniSat’s planned implementation. The disagreement between Domo and UniSat highlights the important discussion of finding a balance between innovation and stability in the cryptocurrency space.

BRC-20 Token and Bitcoin Ordinal Enhance Bitcoin Environment

Bitcoin’s ordinal system, devised by developer Casey Rodarmor in January 2023, inspired Domo to create the BRC-20 token standard in March 2023. Currently, the market capitalization of BRC-20 tokens reaches $1.76 billion.

The recent rise in popularity of the BRC-20 token marks a notable technological advancement in Bitcoin history.

Bitcoin Ordinals is a numbering system that assigns a unique number to each satoshi, or 100 millionth of a Bitcoin, allowing it to be tracked and transmitted. This system, combined with an inscription process that adds a layer of data to each satoshi, allows users to create unique digital assets on the Bitcoin blockchain.

As UniSat unveils its improvement plans, the wider BRC-20 community engages in discussions about the protocol update, highlighting the challenges of incorporating new features while maintaining safety and consensus in an evolving blockchain ecosystem.
