BNB Chain Updates Execution Client Strategy, Erigon Exit by End of 2025

briefly

The BNB chain will no longer use Erigon-running clients by the end of 2025, introducing the Rust-based Reth-BSC alongside Geth to improve performance, maintain client diversity, and strengthen long-term network stability.

BNB Chain Announces Discontinuation of Erigon Client Support, Introduces Reth-BSC for Next-Generation Performance

BNB Chain, the decentralized blockchain ecosystem developed by Binance, has announced an update to its execution client support as part of its ongoing efforts to improve network performance and stability.

The network is improving its recommended client list to better meet its long-term operational needs. NodeReal, a major contributor to the BNB chain infrastructure, is ending support for Erigon clients and will be deprecated completely by the end of 2025.

The Erigon client served as an alternative execution client for running nodes on the BNB chain, previously known as the BNB Smart Chain. Execution clients are responsible for maintaining the state of the blockchain, processing transactions, and enabling nodes to participate in network consensus. Originally developed as a high-performance, resource-efficient fork of the Ethereum Geth client, Erigon is designed to accelerate synchronization, reduce disk space requirements, and optimize overall node operations.

On the BNB chain, it is tuned to work with the network’s Parlia consensus, providing faster synchronization and higher efficiency for both full and archive nodes.

BNB Chain Reth and Geth for Next-Generation Node Operations

BNB Chain announced that support for the Erigon client will end on December 31, and operators using Erigon are encouraged to migrate to alternative clients in advance. The network is introducing support for Reth-BSC, a high-performance Rust-based execution client designed to provide faster processing, lower resource consumption, and a modular architecture for future scalability. To ensure a strong and resilient network, BNB Chain maintains a multi-client ecosystem, officially recommending and supporting two running clients: Reth, built with Rust, and Geth, built with Go.

This transition represents a strategic evolution of the BNB Chain client ecosystem, reflecting the community’s goal to prioritize next-generation clients like Reth that offer improved performance and efficiency.

This change follows NodeReal’s decision to end support for the Erigon client. By supporting both Reth and Geth, the network maintains client diversity, which is important for maintaining security and stability.

Node operators currently using the Erigon client are encouraged to migrate to Reth or Geth before the December 31st deadline. To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, we recommend starting the testing and migration process early.
