Arbitrum launches permissionless verification solution bold on testnet

Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution Arbitrum has launched its permissionless verification system “Bounded Liquidity Latency” (bold) on testnet. This is expected to achieve the project's Phase 2 goal of strengthening rollup security while promoting broader accessibility.

Arbitrum Bold operates as a dispute resolution protocol with operational, interactive proof-of-fraud capabilities tailored to optimistic rollups that facilitate permissionless verification on the Arbitrum chain. Bold expands Arbitrum’s existing anti-fraud mechanisms by introducing predetermined dispute caps and a new comprehensive dispute design. Bold marking provides the guarantee that a single honest participant can protect the state of the Arbitrum and successfully win a dispute against a malicious entity.

This protocol benefits users by supporting network security and providing permissionless verification to verify withdrawals to Ethereum. We also provide a system for Arbitrum that is designed to withstand delay attacks and enhance overall security. It also facilitates joint modification financing, enabling Arbitrum's defense against invalid claims and objections to such claims initiated by other parties.

Arbitrum plans to conduct more thorough testing of bol. Afterwards, a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) proposal will be formalized to launch upgrades to Arbitrum Sepolia in late spring 2024. If approved by the Arbitrum DAO, the upgrade will extend to Arbitrum One and Nova until summer 2024. The Orbit chain is as follows: By adopting the Nitro software stack, you are expected to automatically get all the benefits and security that bol offers. Eventually, Bold will replace the existing permissioned anti-fraud mechanism currently used by the Arbitrum chain.

Vitalik Buterin Reveals Rollup Evaluation Plan, Setting Stage for Ethereum's Layer 2 Security Advancement

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently announced an evaluation plan to help the community understand its trustworthiness in the rollup's centralized participants or transparent code. This framework categorizes rollups into three stages: stage 0, stage 1, and stage 2. The safety goal of the basic roll-up is to progress to stage 2, which requires all “training wheels” to be removed.

Bold could push Arbitrum further along this trajectory. Achieving permissionless verification represents a pivotal milestone in Arbitrum's path to Phase 2 Rollup and represents the highest level of advancement and maturity in the rollup technology assortment. Bold allows any honest participant to verify and bind their funds and publish accurate Layer 2 status claims to win disputes against malicious entities.
