Apple’s Siri Gets AI Features in iOS 18.1 Developer Beta

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has introduced a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) products, launching a beta version to registered developers.

The beta version of AI features appears to be centered around the voice assistant Siri, and early users have seen improvements. Siri has advanced features, including the ability to create, rewrite, and summarize emails and text messages.

As part of Apple Intelligence, the new beta also brings the ability to maintain context and natural language search across multiple folders. The update is available in the development betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, which includes iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Regular users who want to experience the feature will have to sign up for a waitlist and own an iPhone 15 or a device with an Apple Silicon chip, but it’s unclear when the upgrade will be released.

Originally scheduled to be released before the end of the year, the Forbes report claims that the feature could be delayed until early next year, citing stability issues with Apple Intelligence. For one, the planned introduction of cloud-based AI capabilities away from the traditional on-device model has raised privacy and security concerns among users.

While the company has revealed exclusive proposals to protect users’ privacy and data, Apple is trying to proceed cautiously and may delay the release date for commercial release. Apple is currently trying to catch up in the ecosystem with Samsung, which has revealed a number of AI-based features for its mobile devices.

To compete more favorably with industry leaders, Apple executives say AI upgrades will remain free for users who meet hardware and software requirements, a strategy that could help the company stay ahead of the curve. The California-based company is banking on a range of features to attract new users, while also prioritizing consumer safety.

Features announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June included integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, AI-based grooming features, and Genmoji image generation, and users are eagerly awaiting a commercial release.

Europe could take last place

As the Cupertino-based company prepares to fully roll out its AI capabilities, executives say European users may have to wait longer to get them.

Executives pointed to new regulations in the region that are blocking launches, as well as restrictions on services within the EU for other big tech companies exploring new technologies.

Apple said, “Due to regulatory uncertainty brought about by the Digital Markets Act, we do not believe we will be able to launch three of these new features to EU users this year: iPhone mirroring, SharePlay screen sharing improvements, and Apple Intelligence.”

For artificial intelligence (AI) to operate within legal boundaries and succeed in the face of increasing challenges, it must integrate enterprise blockchain systems that ensure data entry quality and ownership, ensuring data immutability while keeping it safe.
