Anthropic launches AI models Opus, Sonnet and Haiku to power Claude 3 chatbot for advanced tasks

AI startup Anthropic launches Claude 3 models for chatbots Opus, Sonnet and Haiku

AI startup Anthropic has announced the launch of a new model of its chatbot Claude to improve its ability to execute complex commands efficiently. The three models (Claude 3 Opus, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Haiku) have varying levels of power and speed, with Opus being the most robust and Haiku being the lightest and fastest.

According to Anthropic, Opus performed exceptionally well on key assessments including undergraduate-level knowledge, graduate-level reasoning, and basic mathematics, surpassing industry benchmarks set by OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini Ultra. In contrast, the Sonnet and Haiku are designed to be smaller, more budget-friendly models. To conduct A/B testing for the Claude 3 model, the company partnered with Airtable and Asana.

Opus and Sonnet are currently available on claude.ai and Claude API in 159 countries, but Haiku is expected to be available in the near future.

All Claude 3 models demonstrate improvements in a variety of areas, including analysis and prediction, nuanced content creation, code generation, and communication in non-English languages such as Spanish, Japanese, and French.

Moreover, Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku showed a reduced probability of refusing to respond to prompts that approach system boundaries compared to previous model generations. The Claude 3 model demonstrates a more nuanced understanding of requests, identifying potential real harm and refusing to respond to innocuous prompts less often.

The new model set supports a multimodal approach, allowing users to upload images and documents for analysis, setting it apart from competitors. Claude 3 also extends the summarization feature to approximately 200,000 words, a significant increase over the previous version, which could summarize up to 75,000 words.

The initial release of the Claude 3 family comes with a 200,000 token context window. Nonetheless, all three models are capable of entering over 1 million tokens, and this expanded functionality can be made accessible to specific customers who require increased processing power.

Anthropic’s Rapid Advances Enhance the AI Environment

Anthropic, founded in 2021, is an AI startup founded by former members of the AI research group OpenAI. The company specializes in developing general AI systems and large language models (LLMs). With strong support from several investors, Anthropic secured significant funding throughout the previous year to accelerate its AI product launch. Recently, Anthropic launched a new funding round led by Menlo Ventures to raise $750 million, and its pre-funding valuation now stands at $18.4 billion.

The introduction of the Claude 3 model highlights a significant leap forward in the company’s AI capabilities and marks a pivotal milestone in the company’s advancement within the AI landscape.
