All OpenSim statistics decrease during grid outage – Hypergrid Business

This month, OpenSim’s total area is down by the equivalent of over 3,000 standard regions, total registered users are down by over 1,000, and monthly active users are down by 425 compared to the same time last month.

The regional loss is due to Discovery Grid not reporting regional totals for the month. In April, the grid reported 5,178 standard regional equivalents.

Additionally, several grids, including Kater and Friends, ProxyNet, Caribou Grid, and Resurgence, did not report statistics this month. All of these grids reported hundreds of active users earlier this year. If your grid has moved, please let us know at maria@hypergridbusiness.com.

The numerical loss was not due to the closure of the 3rd Rock Grid yesterday. That grid has been active for the past four weeks and has been reporting statistics. That loss will show up in the statistics report next month.

The total land area of OpenSim’s public grid has reached 135,700. This month’s standard area is down from last month’s all-time high, but is still several times larger than the total land area of Second Life.

The biggest beneficiary in terms of land area was OSgrid, which gained 1,160 new standard region equivalents, retaining its position as the largest public grid in OpenSim. ZetaWorlds followed with 1,024 new regions, and Wolf Territories Grid with 384 new regions.

At the same time, the number of active users decreased to 47,195.

Wolf Territory Grid remains number one in traffic volume.

I am currently tracking a total of 2,661 OpenSim grids, of which 307 are active and 249 have published statistics this month. If there is a statistics page that I am not tracking, please email me at maria@hypergridbusiness.com so that your grid can be mentioned in this report each month, giving it more visibility to both search engines and users.

The following grids were added to the database this month: 3World, BachmansWorld One, Bridger, CyberDataStorm, Dark Heaven.

Also, we will no longer be sending out monthly email blasts to remind OpenSim grid owners to send us news and updates about this report. If you have news, please send us an email 10 days before each month to include a short item in this monthly summary. For longer news, please feel free to send us a press release.

OpenSim area May 2024 (Hypergrid Business data).

Our statistics do not include many grids running on DreamGrid, a distribution of OpenSim, as DreamGrid tends to be private grids.

OpenSim is a free, open-source virtual world platform similar to Second Life that allows non-technical people to quickly and cheaply create virtual worlds and teleport to other virtual worlds. Those with technical skills can run OpenSim worlds on their servers for free using DreamGrid, the official OpenSim installer for the more technically adept, or other distributions, with commercial hosting starting at less than $5 per location.

A list of OpenSim hosting providers is available here. Download the recommended Firestorm viewer here and find out where to get OpenSim world or local content here.

The Hypergrid Business newsletter is now available.

On the 15th of every month (right after the statistics report comes out) we will send out a newsletter with all the OpenSim news from the previous month. You can subscribe here or fill out the form below.

Top 25 grids by active users

For general purpose social grids, especially closed grids, the rule of thumb is that the busier the better. People looking to make new friends will go to the grid that already has the most users. Merchants looking to sell content will go to the grid with the most potential customers. Event organizers looking for the biggest audience will get the idea.
