Epic is adding LEGO, racing, and rock band-style music games to Fortnite, expanding the platform into an all-in-one metaverse experience.

Along with helping promote user-created islands created in Fortnite, Epic has added a LEGO game expansion, Rocket Racing (from the creator of Rocket League), and Fortnite Festival, a Rockband-type multiplayer game mode from the franchise’s creator. The core Fortnite experience. (See above.)

Longtime gaming industry reporter Stephen Totilo has a summary for the Axios newsletter, where he also mentions what Fortnite brings. 100 million active players last month. Stephen took the opportunity to explain how this fits into Epic’s attempt to evolve Fortnite into the Metaverse.

"The goal is to have the world’s best teams across absolutely a variety of genres develop their games organically within Fortnite." (Saxs, Head of Fortnite Ecosystem at Epic) Persson said:

Introducing new games that stimulate players’ creativity is key, said Wagner James Au. "Creating an important metaverse," tells Axios. "This will help drive the user base beyond the core Battle Royale combat mode and encourage the user community to build more diverse experiences through the platform’s powerful creation tools. In other words, evolve Fortnite into the full-fledged metaverse that Tim Sweeney has been dreaming of for decades."

From speaking with Fortnite community creators, my understanding is that the existing audience is overwhelmingly expecting a battle royale type game, which has led to an inability to create islands that cater to that genre. As Epic expands its core experience to include LEGO, racing, and multiplayer music, it should encourage its community ecosystem to expand as well.
