Gaming giant Nexon launches token through blockchain subsidiary

Nexon’s blockchain division has launched a new token to drive user engagement and ecosystem growth for web3 games.

NEXPACE, the blockchain subsidiary of South Korean video game developer Nexon, announced that it is launching its own cryptocurrency to increase user engagement and drive ecosystem growth for its web3 game MapleStory Universe.

NEXPACE announced on Medium on August 27 that the so-called NXPC token is designed to allow players and community members to directly contribute to the creation of in-game content, a role that has traditionally been reserved for game developers.

MapleStory Universe, a Web3 spinoff of Nexon’s 2003 2D online game MapleStory, is built on the Avalanche blockchain and incorporates a non-fungible token at its core. The NXPC token is expected to facilitate “a natural flow of community-driven growth” by allowing contributors to interact with in-game items, the company said. While specific details were not disclosed, the token is expected to be based on the Avalanche blockchain, just like the game itself.

NEXPACE says the token will allow contributors to interact with in-game items, facilitating a “natural flow of community-driven growth.” While the company doesn’t specify, the token is expected to be based on the Avalanche blockchain, just like the game itself.

This is not Nexon’s first foray into the crypto space, but it does show the company’s dedication to the blockchain space. The company previously purchased over 1,700 (BTC) for around $100 million. At the time, Nexon CEO Owen Mahoney said the purchase “reflects a disciplined strategy to protect shareholder value and maintain the purchasing power of cash assets.”
