OpenSim users hit record high despite 3rd Rock closure – Hypergrid Business

OpenSim active users increase. 1,039 This month, a new all-time high of 48,234 was reached. Total land area also increased to 489 standard area equivalents.

However, the total number of registered users across all public OpenSim grids has decreased by more than 10,000 since May. The biggest reason for the decrease? 3rd Rock Grid has officially closed and some of its community has moved to ZetaWorlds. Last month, 3rd Rock Grid reported 13,615 registered users, but only 250 active users. 3rd Rock was one of the oldest OpenSim venues, founded in 2008, and has accumulated a lot of user registrations over the past decade and a half.

Several other grids, including CandM World, did not report any statistics this month. CandM World was active this month but did not display any statistics on the statistics page. This grid had over 500 activities in May.

We are currently tracking a total of 2,663 public grids, of which 309 are active and 253 have published statistics this month. If you have a statistics page that we are not tracking, please email us at maria@hypergridbusiness.com and we will make sure your grid is mentioned in this report each month, increasing your visibility to both search engines and users.

This month, OSgrid was the largest grid by land area with 32,547 standard regions equivalent, while Wolf Territories Grid was the most active with 6,232 unique logins in the last 30 days.

OpenSim area as of June 2024 (Hypergrid Business data).

Our statistics do not include most grids running on DreamGrid, a free and easy-to-use version of OpenSim, as these are typically personal grids.

OpenSim is a free, open source virtual world platform similar to Second Life that allows non-technical people to quickly and cheaply create virtual worlds and teleport to other virtual worlds. Those with technical skills can run OpenSim worlds on their servers for free using DreamGrid, the official OpenSim installer for the more technically adept, or other distributions, with commercial hosting starting at less than $5 per location.

A list of OpenSim hosting providers is available here. Download the recommended Firestorm viewer here and find out where to get OpenSim world or local content here.

The Hypergrid Business newsletter is now available.

On the 15th of every month (right after the statistics report comes out) we will send out a newsletter with all the OpenSim news from the previous month. You can subscribe here or fill out the form below.
