BNB Chain Announces BEP 336 Upgrade Modeled after Ethereum

BNB Smart Chain has unveiled BEP 336, an upcoming major upgrade inspired by Ethereum’s EIP 4844.

According to BNB Chain, BEP 336 will significantly reduce transaction costs and improve network performance. This development coincides with Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade launching on mainnet today, marking a significant day for blockchain technology.

The upgrade introduces “Blob-Carrying Transactions” (BlobTx), which allows temporary and cost-effective storage of large chunks of data, up to 128 KB. This approach simplifies the transaction confirmation process on the network. BNB Smart Chain (BSC) increases efficiency by verifying data accuracy within blobs rather than verifying each transaction individually. This feature is especially useful for opBNB, the layer 2 network of the BNB ecosystem.

The upgrade consists of a pre-compilation agreement with the Blob Marketplace. The former regulates blob storage and transmission costs based on network demand, while the latter adds a layer of security by checking the data in the blob against transactional references.

BEP 336 is differentiated from Ethereum’s EIP 4844 by features such as a dynamic gas pricing mechanism for blobs and a different token burn mechanism that reflect the unique requirements and structure of the BSC.

BEP 336 is set for a phased rollout. It is scheduled to debut on testnet in April, followed by a magnet phase in May for further testing and optimization. The upgrade is scheduled to be released on the BSC mainnet in June through a hard fork.
