META highlights technological innovations of 2024: Metaverse, AI and mobile messaging

In 2024, Meta pinpoints three pivotal areas for technological change and growth within and beyond the Metaverse: the continued evolution of the Metaverse, the emergence of on-device Large Language Models (LLMs), and the new wave of mobile messaging. These sectors represent the forefront of Meta’s vision for a digitally inclusive future.

Meta reported developments within the Metaverse, particularly highlighting the growing number of applications in the fitness, wellness and education sectors. “As the hype cycle shifts from the metaverse to AI, we remain committed to both,” the company said in a blog post.

Additionally, with the release of Meta’s ‘Caddy’, great progress has been made in improving CAD (Computer Aided Design). This enables collaborative 3D modeling across distances and makes the technology accessible to more people. Caddy provides the ability to view 3D models in cross section, create simple drawings, and measure both digital and physical objects.

The precision and detail seen in 3D models allows users to zoom in on small components such as sensors and batteries. This feature provides detailed insight into the assembly and structure of various items.

The emergence of on-device LLM

As AI processes shift from centralized cloud computing to localized edge devices, the user experience will be redefined, ensuring more personalized interactions and lower latency. On-device LLM integration heralds a new era in which mobile devices evolve beyond communication tools into intelligent assistants.

According to Meta, “We will reach a hybrid model where some tasks are completed by LLMs running in the cloud and others are performed on phones or stylish smart glasses in the palm of your hand.”

Meta’s style of integrating AI into Ray-Ban smart glasses demonstrates the potential for wearable technology, when combined with smart technology, to act as an intuitive mobile assistant for tasks such as language translation and content creation.

On another note, Google is optimistic that it will introduce advanced artificial intelligence models to smartphones within the next year. The company expects its Gemini Large Language Model (LLM), which competes with Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s GPT-4 AI model, to begin being integrated into devices next year.

As AI becomes more entrenched in our daily lives, our expectations of brand interactions are also evolving. Meta’s enhancements to business messaging tools across its platforms aim to provide businesses with a more personal way to connect with their customers. Additionally, the launch of Meta Connect 2023’s AI Studio allows you to create custom AI assistants tailored to your brand identity and consumer preferences for more personalized communications.

After 2024, Meta will focus on three important areas: strengthening the Metaverse, improving on-device AI for personalized interactions, and advancing mobile messaging. Overall, this approach reflects a broader trend in technology toward more immersive, personalized, and efficient digital experiences.
