Game platform Roblox is using artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a multilingual translation model that supports real chat conversations on the metaverse platform.
The company shared in a blog post that it achieved this by deploying a large-scale language model (LLM) with advanced features supporting 16 languages on Roblox. The AI-based translation function allows Roblox’s 70 million daily users to communicate in real time without delay.
Roblox’s LLM reached this milestone thanks to processing speeds with latency of less than 100 milliseconds. In addition to speed, the AI feature boasts impressive accuracy, including support for colloquialisms, abbreviations, and a ‘Roblox-specific language’.
Roblox’s product offers several advantages by including all language pairs in a single interface, rather than building a separate LLM for each language pair. In addition to maintaining translation accuracy, integrated translator-based translation offers the benefits of saving time and money.

In the future, Roblox said it will begin translating in-game text in images and 3D models for users in addition to translating voice chat. To ensure a sound gaming experience, Sturman said the voice chat translation feature will capture the “rhythm and emotion” of players’ voices in real time.
